FAQs

What is your fee for service?

My fee for service rate is $200 per 53-60 minute session.

I am a member of the Open Path Collective and reserve several low-fee cash pay slots for clients who qualify for this initiative.

Do you take insurance?

No. I am out-of-network with insurance companies. The decision to structure my practice as self-pay, rather than insurance based, was not an easy one. However, I believe that I can provide the highest quality service to my clients when working outside the confines of the medical model and administrative red tape of in-network services.

You may be eligible for out-of-network partial reimbursement from your insurance company for services with me. Toward this aim, I am happy to provide you with what is known as a “Superbill” for you to file with your insurance company. I can provide this Superbill, but I cannot engage with your insurance company or negotiate reimbursement on your behalf. I encourage you to contact your provider about your out-of-network benefits if you are interested in exploring this option for reimbursement.

Will you diagnose me?

Not necessarily. I believe that psychological and emotional suffering is part of the human condition and results from complex interactions between an individual and their environment. I conceptualize my clients’ struggles in a way that helps me best understand their unique experiences and select effective treatment approaches. This effort may or may not be aided by identifying “a diagnosis” of a particular disorder from the International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision (ICD-10) that corresponds to your lived experience. At the same time, providing you with a Superbill to pursue out-of-network insurance reimbursement requires that I provide some diagnostic information.  I am happy to have discussions with you around the concept of diagnoses and your thoughts/feelings about diagnoses.

How long would we work together?

Length of treatment could vary considerably from several months to several years. Some seek therapy for an acute symptoms and can complete treatment in a handful of months, e.g. a single depressive episode in a time of transition or acute insomnia. Others are interested in resolving a more chronic set of symptoms, like panic attacks or chronically low mood, which may require ~6-12 months to achieve desired results. In the case of resolving chronic symptoms and patterns resulting from a difficult upbringing and/or multiple traumatic experiences, some clients may choose to work for more than 12 months.

Weekly session frequency is preferred for most treatment modalities to keep momentum and maximize gains. However, every other week sessions can be quite workable for some presenting concerns. When you are ready for therapy graduation, we will likely choose to “taper down” frequency of sessions.

As a team, we will discuss your personal timeline for treatment and session frequency. Therapy with me will not feel aimless or unhelpfully meandering. Together we will review and update our treatment goals and plans every 3-4 months. My goal is always to work myself right out of a job. We will ‘make haste, slowly’ at both a brisk and measured pace.

How do you understand Cultural Competence?

Cultural competence is defined as the ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one's own (apa.org). One of my core values is continual striving to hone skills in attuning to, empathizing with, and serving clients whose lived experience and identities are different than mine. I welcome thoughtful, authentic conversations around the impact and role of social identities in your life and treatment needs, as well as how our differences might impact our work together.
